If you wondered why Leonardo DiCaprio has been looking so scraggly and unkempt lately, good news: The 39-year-old actor hasn’t fallen into a deep depression following his Wolf of Wall Street Oscar loss, but is instead merely preparing to play a 19th-century fur trapper who miraculously survives a vicious bear mauling in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant, which will begin filming in the wilderness of British Columbia on Sept. 29.
The production will also shoot in Mammoth Studios in Burnaby, BC, and in the Calgary area.
Tom Hardy (DiCaprio’s Inception co-star), Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars: Episode VII), and Will Poulter (We’re the Millers) will play the three men who leave DiCaprio’s character for dead after the bear attack (and whom DiCaprio’s character targets for revenge once he recovers).
In 2010, Christian Bale was attached to play the lead role with John Hillcoat (Lawless) directing.
The production is expected to wrap in March 2015.
