First Look At ‘Theory Of Everything’

By David Humphreys, .

This year’s Oscar race will officially get underway in September, and already revving its engine is The Theory Of Everything, a biopic of Stephen Hawking, which promises to do for the legendary theoretical physicist what A Beautiful Mind did for legendary mathematician John Nash.

At first glance, the two movies seem to have more than a bit in common. Both focus on young geniuses who came up with Nobel Prize-worthy theories (although Hawking has strangely not been awarded the prize yet) while battling a serious disease. But whereas Nash’s major contributions to mathematics came before his battle with schizophrenia, Hawking’s far more significant contributions to physics came after he was diagnosed with ALS.

Eddie Redmayne (My Week With Marilyn) stars as Hawking and Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) plays Jane, his first wife.

The Theory of Everything will premiere during the opening weekend of TIFF and will enter into wider release on Nov. 7.
