Chronicling the event in his new book Just Getting Started, legendary crooner Tony Bennett recalls his unusual first “encounter” with wife Susan Benedetto.
Then 40-years-old, the singer says he met Benedetto’s parents at a show in 1966 – Marion and Dayl Crow were dedicated Bennett fans.
The two starstruck concertgoers posed for photos with Bennett backstage. “As fate would have it, Marion was pregnant at the time with… Susan!” Bennett recalls. “It’s a photo we all laugh about, knowing the incredible turn of events that followed.”
Bennett and Benedetto met years later at another one of his shows. “It tickled me that someone of her age was so devoted to my music,” he says. “I not only agreed to say hello to her backstage but asked her to be my date for the evening, and that’s how it all really began, foreshadowed by a backstage photo taken in 1966!”
The “Because of You” singer, now 90, and Benedetto began dating in the late ’80s and finally got married in 2007.
