Of the four movies that Kristen Stewart has slated for release in 2014, three have either debuted or are scheduled to debut at major film festivals. Camp X-Ray was the first of the batch to play the festival circuit, playing at Sundance in January. Although the movie itself only received so-so notices, Kristen Stewart’s performance was hailed as one of her best. The Clouds of Sils Maria followed a few months later at Cannes, and once again, Stewart’s performance was praised as a career-high and a potential awards contender. (The movie itself also received strong notices). Up next is Still Alice, which will premiere at TIFF in September. If the pattern holds, expect glowing notices.
The first trailer for Camp X-Ray is out today, and it gives us a hint as to what all the fuss was about at Sundance. Stewart plays a security guard at Guantanamo Bay who strikes up an unlikely friendship with one of the inmates (Peyman Moaadi from the Oscar-winning A Separation). Needless to say, Stewart seems to have come a very long way from Forks, Washington.
Camp X-Ray hits theatres Oct. 17.
