Shannen Doherty Prepares For Reconstructive Surgery As Her Cancer Battle Continues

Shannen Doherty is undertaking a major step as she inches towards her recovery from breast cancer.

The actress, who was diagnosed in 2015 and recently endured several rounds of chemotherapy, is preparing to have doctors reconstruct her breast after undergoing a single mastectomy in the spring.

Doherty has been documenting her struggle on Instagram, with her latest post coming straight from the office of her plastic surgeon. “Getting my expander expanded by my reconstructive surgeon @jayorringermd and the lovely Ana Marie. I consider myself very lucky and very blessed to have this man as my doctor,” she captioned a video of Dr. Jay S Orringer dabbing iodine on her right breast. “The last couple of days have been busy gearing up for radiation. #warrior #fightlikeagirl #cancerslayer.”

The 45-year-old had a temporary inflatable tissue expander inserted shortly after her mastectomy, which is meant to stretch the skin ahead of her permanent breast implant surgery.

“Because I’m starting radiation soon, he has to over-expand me — make sort of this placeholder, if you will, larger because radiation shrinks it,” she told her followers in the video.

Doherty has opted against making red carpet appearances as she continues her recovery. She recently missed a “90210” reunion at REWind Con in Chicago, but she certainly was on the minds of her former co-stars, who honoured her with touching tributes.
