Nicole Kidman Opens Up About Keith Urban’s Struggle With Addiction: ‘You Can’t Save Somebody, They’ve Got To Save Themselves’

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary this summer, but she admits that it wasn’t an easy time when Urban decided to check himself into rehab after they’d only been married for four months.

In a new interview with People‘s editorial director Jess Cagle, Kidman looks back in order to share her experiences “as the wife of somebody who’s been through” a battle with addiction.

The most important piece of advice she can give the loved one of an addict is “to get help. To put your hand up, to reach out. There is absolutely help out there. You can’t save somebody, they’ve got to save themselves.”

That proved to be an important lesson for her, admitting it’s “a very big thing for people like me who go, ‘I can take care of you. I can do it.’ At some point, you just have to say, ‘I love you and I’m here when you decide to do the work. If you don’t, then that’s it.’”

Urban’s struggles with alcohol abuse date back to early in his career in the 1990s, and he had apparently reached the end of his rope when he checked himself into the famed Betty Ford Center in 2007, shortly after he and Kidman tied the knot.

“Nicole listened to her heart and did what she felt was the right thing to do,” Urban told People back in 2007. “To see that kind of love in action, that’s very moving and deeply inspiring and just makes me want to be a better man.”

Adds Kidman: “It’s not easy, but there’s an extraordinary life if you do get there through help.” Watch:
