Outkast’s “Ms. Jackson” was a chart-topping hit, but for Erykah Badu and her mother – the song had a whole other level of meaning.
The song was inspired by Andre 3000’s romantic relationship with Badu, the pair have a 19-year-old son. Speaking with Rap Radar, the “On & On” singer admits she wasn’t thrilled when “Ms. Jackson” was first released: “It hit kind of a sore spot. I didn’t wanna hear that… [but] when I heard Andre’s verse, I felt very good because his verse was really, really inspiring.”
Badu admits she has always appreciated Andre’s honesty and vulnerability. So what about Badu’s mom, the real-life Ms. Jackson? According to Badu, her mama is obsessed with the track! “Baby, she bought herself a ‘Ms. Jackson’ licence plate,” she says. “She had the mug. She had the ink pen. She had the headband; everything.”
The former couple have since mended their friendship, as Andre appeared on Badu’s 2015 song “Hello”. Relive “Ms. Jackson” in all its glory and watch the video below!
