Matthew McConaughey And Jeff Bridges Talk Iconic Roles In ‘Dazed And Confused’ And ‘The Big Lebowski’

The Dude meets the most laid-back former high-schooler of all time as Jeff Bridges and Matthew McConaughey get together to chat about their most iconic characters for Variety‘s “Actors On Actors” series.

The Oscar-winning pair were quick to pick their favourite – and most iconic – roles to date. For McConaughey, it’s his “Dazed And Confused” character Dave Wooderson, which also happens to be his first major film role.

Despite building an impressive body of work and taking home an Oscar in the 26 years since slipping into Dave’s highly-quotable shoes, McConaughey’s “Dazed And Confused” fan interactions remain his favourite.

“I have some people come up to me and say the first line of a ‘Dazed’ line and I’ll say the second half back,” McConaughey tells Bridges. “And those are my favourite fans.”
It’s a sentiment echoed by “The Big Lebowski” star Bridges, who loves his bowling-loving slacker character The Dude as much as fans do.

“I love that, man,” the actor replies. “Whether I was in it or not, [‘The Big Lebowski’] would probably be one of my favorite movies. Any kind of recognition from that movie — I never get tired.”

“The Dude goes with you,” McConaughey adds.

“S***, I have a band, man, we’re called the Abiders!,” Bridges reveals, referencing one of The Dude’s classic lines, “The Dude abides”.
