Gigi Hadid is the latest celebrity to take a break from social media.
The 21-year-old supermodel announced her digital detox plan on Wednesday, during Reebok’s #PerfectNever panel featuring Lena Dunham, Ruby Rose, Zoe Kravitz, Aly Raisman and ESPN broadcaster Jessica Mendoza.
“I’m taking a month off, actually, during New Years [sic],” Hadid said before assuring the New York City crowd that she wasn’t deleting her accounts.
“I’m just taking the apps off my phone,” she explained. “It’s empowering, not just for people in the spotlight, for everyone. At the end of the day, I’m choosing what I’m showing you. A lot of the world feels so entitled to other peoples’ lives, which is so crazy.”
Hadid also shared advice on ignoring nasty messages and leaning on family and friends for support.
“When certain things happen to me I have friends like Lena [Dunham] that I call,” said the Reebok brand ambassador. “That’s who I go to for advice.”
Listening to loved ones is crucial for Hadid, who referenced a quote from her stepfather, David Foster.
“My stepdad always said, ‘if you believe the good, you’re going to believe the bad,” she continued. “So I think [that you have to] pick the people who are important to you, if they said you did a good job that day, then you did a good job because they know you worked hard for it. “
That doesn’t mean she only accepts praise. Hadid pointed out that it’s important to take “constructive criticism,” but only from the “people that know you.”
Given her popularity, Hadid is pretty much always under a public microscope, and she admitted that the scrutiny takes a toll.
“You start to believe things that are just insane,” she confessed, revealing that she gives personal pep talks to remind herself that she’s a “good person” with “good intentions.”
Like the other women on the panel, Hadid has had her share of imperfect moments, and she doesn’t see that as a bad thing.
“A lot of people expect us to be perfect, and it’s often the times when we haven’t been perfect that have made us more human and more relatable,” she said.
When she’s not empowering other women by showing her vulnerability, Hadid is strutting down catwalks all across the globe. Watch her slay the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in the video below.
