“Shameless” star Emmy Rossum is refusing to go ahead with season eight of the Showtime series until executives meet her equal pay demands.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress, who plays matriarch Fiona Gallagher on the show, is caught in a standoff that is holding up the renewal of the latest season.
Multiple sources tell the publication that Rossum is requesting salary parity with co-star William H. Macy and is arguing that, after many years of being paid much less than Macy, she deserves to be paid more than him per episode.
Rossum’s demands come after he recently renegotiated his deal with Warner Bros. Television for the eighth season of the show.
The last round of salary negotiations on the show saw the entire cast receive raises, however, Macy has always been paid more due to his extensive film career and Oscar nomination. As THR notes, however, Rossum’s Fiona has often been the focal point of the series and plays a significant role in each and every episode.
If Rossum closes her deal, salary re-negotiations will occur with other members of the cast – otherwise, the show may move on without her, or worse, be cancelled altogether.
Rossum is the latest actress to enter salary parity negotiations as the subject of equal pay remains a heated topic of conversation in Hollywood. “House of Cards” star Robin Wright recently requested to make the same salary as co-star Kevin Spacey and threatened to go public if her requirements were not met.
