Social media is on fire after Canada’s own “Deadpool” actor Ryan Reynolds, “La La Land”‘s Ryan Gosling and Denis Villeneuve’s film “Arrival” received Golden Globe nods. See all the reaction below.
“Moonlight” filmmaker Barry Jenkins tells ET Canada’s Cheryl Hickey of his Best Director and Best Screenplay nominations: “I was there all 25 days when we made this film. The idea of waking up in the morning and receiving six Golden Globes [nominations] was not a part of that process.”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus gets witty while acknowledging multiple “Veep” nominations: “Huge thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Russian hackers that made our nominations possible.”
Lin Manuel-Miranda sings a happy tune after Best Song nod from “Moana”: “Gracias. Merci. Grazie. Danke sehr. Mahalo. Thank you Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this tremendous honour. Congratulations to my fellow nominees. Over two years ago, I was lucky enough to have been given my dream job, writing songs for a Disney animated film, alongside the amazing Opetaia Foa’i & Mark Mancina. Today, for ‘Moana’ to be recognized for what we created is truly beyond comprehension. ‘How Far I’ll Go’ not only embodies the spirit of our heroine but the central lesson from the film —dream big, listen to your gut, don’t give up, never forget where you came from, and one day you might just save the world.”
Hailee Steinfeld is stoked on her ‘The Edge of Seventeen’ nomination: “I am overcome with excitement and joy to be nominated for ‘The Edge of Seventeen’. We set out to make a film that would resonate with men and women of all ages because the message of self-acceptance and embracing your truth is universal. Contrary to the reality that I face as a young actress on a daily basis, ‘Eo17’ isn’t a film about a teenage girl wrestling with her identity and self-worth because of the influence of social media defining her popularity. Instead, it’s an anthem for self-acceptance and I’m so grateful to Jim Brooks and Kelly Fremon-Craig for granting me the opportunity to play such a complex and unlikely heroine.”
Matt Damon congratulates “Manchester By The Sea”, for which Damon was a producer: “Congratulations to our incredible crew and a deep thank you to Kenny Lonergan and the entire cast who poured their hearts and souls into this, and thank you as well to the HFPA for championing a little movie like ours.”
Mel Gibson continues his comeback with a nod for Best Director: “I’m very appreciative of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s overwhelming recognition of Hacksaw Ridge. This film was a labour of love for everyone involved, and is also about a man who truly exemplified love and goodness. It’s thrilling to see Andrew Garfield nominated today since he is the beating heart of our film. I share any honour received for this film and for myself with every actor and every crew member that came to the set each day giving their all to honor the story of our brave veterans, and most especially Desmond Doss, a true hero.”
Ruth Negga talks Best Actress nomination for “Loving”: “I am profoundly grateful for this recognition… I can’t thank the HFPA enough for their support, this is such an honour. I am humbled to be in the company of all of these extraordinary, talented, and powerful women. It has been such a gift to share Mildred and Richard Loving’s important story with the world. I share this honour with my partner in the film, Joel Edgerton, our incredible director Jeff Nichols and everyone involved in bringing ‘Loving’ to life.”
Lily Collins shocked by Best Actress nod for “Rules Don’t Apply”: “I’ve never felt so shocked, honoured, and proud. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to my fearless leader and mentor Warren Beatty, the Hollywood Foreign Press, and to all those involved with Rules Don’t Apply. Sharing this moment with my mom sitting on our couch in the dark is something I’ll never forget. It’s a complete dream come true. I still can’t breathe.”
Dev Patel on receiving his Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance on behalf of “Lion”: “I literally just woke up to this news. I am so humbled to be acknowledged in a category alongside these incredible gentleman. I’m feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude for my real family back home in London and in India and for my ‘Lion’ family, especially for the leader of our pride, director Garth Davis. The best thing about this though is that my mom is going to be really f**king happy.”
Gina Rodriguez thankful for Best Performance nod at Golden Globes: “Thank you to the HFPA for always recognizing new and unbelievable talent regardless of colour or culture. The HFPA changed my life three years ago and they continue to do so for so many talented artists and projects out there. How wonderful it is to see an awards show so full of diversity, and not just for diversity sake, but because of the phenomenal performances. I feel beyond blessed and humbled to have been one of their discoveries. It’s 10 p.m. in Thailand and I think we are going out for a celebratory beer and tacos. Yup. I said tacos in Thailand, wish me luck!”
“Better Call Saul” star Bob Odenkirk blown away by nomination: “Blown away again to be recognized in the sea of excellence that is TV drama right now. I’m going to take it as a compliment for every aspect of Better Call Saul. The writing, the entire cast around me and everyone involved in the production of it. I really love getting to know the empathetic character Jimmy McGill, the man behind the not so empathetic, rapscallion Saul Goodman. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press!”
Viggo Mortensen honoured by Best Performance nod: “It’s a privilege to have participated in a great ensemble story like ‘Captain Fantastic’, one that has steadily earned its place among the most admired movies of the year by virtue of the passionate response it has received from audiences everywhere. Matt Ross has made that rare kind of film that prompts people to look at the world with fresh eyes, to laugh and cry and think. I’m very proud to be a part of it.”

I’m sincerely humbled by this honour. Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney were so brave to entrust us with the responsibility of bringing these extraordinary characters to life. I’m truly blessed to have had the opportunity to contribute in some small way.”
Riley Keough addresses her Best Actress nomination: “I am so honoured and honestly shocked to be recognized for my role in The Girlfriend Experience. I have been very luck to work with Steven Soderbergh throughout my career. I’m thankful for Amy Seimetz for creating this complicated female character, and even more grateful to the HFPA for recognizing such an unusual character.”
Casey Affleck on his Best Actor nomination for “Manchester by the Sea”: “Huge thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this prestigious honour. It will actually be my first time attending the Golden Globes and I’ve been working for more than 20 years, so this moment isn’t lost on me. It’s really meaningful for our film. Thank you.”

It’s an honor to stand with actors like Denzel Washington who have inspired me since I was old enough to watch movies. I’m very proud of ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ and I share this with Bill Mechanic, David Permut and Mel who led the charge on this project with great vision, humility, integrity and love. I dedicate this nomination and my work to the incomparable Desmond Doss and all those who sacrifice themselves in the service of the protection and freedom of others. He is a profound symbol of healing and compassion for the times we are in.”

What a wonderful way to finish off the year… wow! In recognition that no one gets to this place in their career by themselves, I have to first thank my wife and two children for giving me such a clear purpose for being. Ryan, Andrew, Amaré… you make this all worthwhile! Jennifer Wiley Stockton… thank you for doing so much, so that I can stay focused on the task at hand. Let us never part. Michael Geiser, you are unsung, sir! (And if you erase this from my statement, we’ll have words)! Love you, buddy. I am grateful everyday that I get to portray a woman who is strong-willed, confident, intelligent, empowered and simply unforgettable. While “Outlander” is a brilliant period show, Claire represents so many qualities of a 20th Century modern day woman, someone who is forging her own path, fighting for what she believes and doing so with integrity. I am thrilled to be nominated among such an amazing and talented group of women.”
