The United Nations is ending its ties to Wonder Woman, two months after her appointment as an honourary ambassador sparked outrage.
In October, the iconic superhero was given the honour to promote messages of women’s empowerment and call attention to gender-based violence. Her appointment was met with backlash, due in part to her sexualized depiction in the comics which critics deemed inappropriate given her intended UN message.
A petition against Wonder Woman’s selection by the UN gained nearly 45,000 signatures stating that her character is not “culturally encompassing or sensitive.” It was announced that Wonder Woman’s ties with the UN would come to an end on Friday, though no specific reason was given. UN spokesperson Jeffrey Brez tells Reuters that few fictional ambassadors last more than a few months.
Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are participating in a year-long initiative with the UN and UNICEF to support gender equality and women’s empowerment.
