John Mayer made one of the biggest social media mistakes of his career this week when he took to Twitter declaring Taylor Swift’s birthday as the “lamest day of the year.”
The singer, who dated Swift for four months in 2009, famously inspired the former country star’s “Dear John” ballad.

On Tuesday, as the “Wildest Dreams” singer was celebrating her 27th birthday, Mayer, regrettably tweeted: “Tuesday, December 13 may be the lamest day of the year, conceptually.”
Though he quickly deleted the message, his quick-thinking failed to come before many took note of the awkward timing. “Uh. John Mayer just tweeted and deleted this. But thank God for screenshots #HappyBirthdayTaylorSwift,” a Twitter user noted.
Mayer quickly returned to Twitter on Tuesday to address the controversy and shut down all of his haters. “NOPE. No. Nuh-uh. People I am 39,” he wrote before deleting his second tweet. “I am deleting those tweets. Come right at me for doing so. Absolutely no shade.”
“Looks like I shouldn’t have deleted that tweet,” he added on Wednesday along with a screen capture of his original message.
