Ellen Pompeo felt the wrath of the Twitterverse when the “Grey’s Anatomy” star issued a tweet applauding A&E’s decision to change the name of its controversial KKK reality show, but found herself blasted for using emojis of a black hand giving a thumbs up and a pair of black hands clapping.
For a “privileged white woman” to use black emojis, wrote one critic, was “really obnoxious” — perhaps not knowing that Pompeo’s husband, Chris Ivery, is black, and that the actress is mother to two biracial children.
“It’s not fair to see a privileged white woman use [people of colour] emojis just because you can,” wrote the Twitter user. “It comes off as really obnoxious.”
This was too much for Pompeo to take, and after apologizing for anyone she may have offended, she fired back in a series of tweets, also responding to various Twitter uses:
