After a blockbuster debut season, filming begins today on the second season of hit made-in-Canada medical drama Remedy.
This high-stakes series from creator/showrunner Greg Spottiswood (King) follows the turbulent lives of the Conner family, all of whom work in downtown Toronto’s Bethune Hospital.
The second season is set nine months after the first-season finale, and every member of the Conner family finds themselves pulled out of their comfort zones while the hospital is in the midst of a massive shakeup.
Recovering addict, med-school dropout and hospital orderly Griffin Conner (Dillon Casey) seems to be getting his life back on track, with plans to return to med school and a supportive girlfriend who wants him to succeed, but will he be able to keep his dark, troubled past from derailing all his well-laid plans?
Meanwhile, Conner family patriarch Allen (Enrico Colantoni, Veronica Mars) is having a tough time adjusting to his new status after being demoted from chief of staff, and daughters Mel (Sara Canning) and new mom Sandy (Sarah Allen) are trying to find their footing while co-parenting the newest member of the Conner clan, baby Toby.
In the midst of all this turmoil enters new Bethune ER resident Dr. Cutler (Niall Matter, Primeval: New World, Watchmen), a handsome heartthrob who turns heads even as he ruffles feathers.
“Brimming with emotionally charged storylines, stand-out performances by an electric ensemble cast and a dynamic production team, Remedy captured the hearts of viewers last year and kept them on the edge of their seats all season long,” says Barb Williams, SVP Content, Shaw Media, in a statement. “With the addition of new characters and a top-secret shakeup at Bethune Hospital, Remedy‘s momentum shows no sign of slowing down.”
Williams’ thoughts are echoed by Bernie Zuckerman, Remedy exec producer and president of Indian Grove Productions. “I am thrilled that the Remedy family is coming back for a second season. As proud as all of us were of the first season, our plans for this new season will create even more compelling television.”;
Other cast include Genelle Williams (Warehouse 13, Bitten) as Zoe Rivera, Dillon’s girlfriend and a PSA at Beth-H, and Patrick McKenna (Hard Rock Medical, The Red Green Show) as Frank Kanaskie, Griffon’s supervisor, while Martha Burns (Slings and Arrows, Michael: Tuesdays and Thursdays) will reprise her role as Rebecca Baker, the Conners’ absentee mom, a high-powered attorney and high-functioning drunk.
The second season of Remedy will air spring 2015 on Global.
Meanwhile, new cast member Niall Matter drops by the ET Canada studios today to chat with Cheryl Hickey and Roz Weston, revealing he’s been prepping for the new role by cramming like an actual med student. “The last week I’ve just been sitting at home, going through medical terminology and studying at all hours,”; he says
He also discsses his character, Dr. Peter Cutler, who’ll be making a fast first impression at Bethune. “Dr. Cutler comes in and he’s the new resident in the ER and he shakes things up quite a bit,”; says Niall. “A lot of it happens with the Conner family, but I think within the whole department he gets in there and rattles a few people.”;
You can catch more of Niall’s in-studio interview with Cheryl and Roz on on tonight’s ET Canada, airing at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on Global.
