Jennie Garth is coming off a rough year after finalizing her divorce, but the former Beverly Hills, 90210 star is making a fresh start by renovating her 1970s-era ranch-style home, a process that’s documented in her upcoming HGTV reality show The Jennie Garth Project.

As Jennie tells ET Canada, renovating her home while cameras caught all the action was a unique experience in her showbiz career. “I wasn’t making a show, I was doing my life,” she explains. “You know, I was building the house for my girls and myself and somebody was just filming me.”

Viewers who tune in, reveals Jennie, will experience a different aspect of the renovation in each episode. “We broke the show down into 10 episodes,” she says, “and each episode is sort of representative of one area of the house.”

Jennie’s ultimate goal was not only to provide herself and her daughters with a new home, but also to empower other women out there who are contemplating undertaking the often-daunting task of renovating a home: “I want women to feel confident in themselves and in their decision-making abilities.”

The Jennie Garth Project premieres Sunday, Sept. 21 on HGTV.
