Ciara is opening up about maintaining her “standards” while dating her now-husband Russell Wilson.

The “Body Party” singer and mother-of-one, who drew criticism after revealing she and Wilson abstained from sex before marriage, sat down with Cosmopolitan South Africa to discuss the rationale behind the couple’s difficult decision.

Ciara and Wilson tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in Cheshire, England last summer and are now expecting their first child together. On and off social media, the stars continue to make us swoon with their loved-up appearances and non-stop displays of affection, which Ciara says is the result of a solid friendship.

“I really believe that when you focus on a friendship, you have the opportunity to build a strong foundation for a relationship,” she told the magazine. “And once you know you’re really great friends and you’re what we call ‘equally yoked,’ where you share the same values or the same outlook on life, it kind of sets the tone.”

“Knowing that you’ll always have the friendship and that you can always go back to it is very important, and very powerful,” she continued.

Ciara went on to praise her husband for opening up the dialogue about their sex life — or lack thereof. “I have to give credit to my husband for sharing those views,” she explained. “It’s awesome how it all worked out.”
