For the iconic singer, she went on to say that we can only go up from here. “We have two choices, destruction and creation. I chose creation.” Madonna spoke this week at the Brooklyn Museum alongside artist Marilyn Minter. The superstar spoke about art in the time of protest and opened about Trump.

“It was easy for us to fall into the trap of hating on Donald Trump and being caught in the web of despair,” said the singer. Madonna also had a message of hope for those finding difficulty in the current political climate. “We need to just figure out what we’re going to do that’s going to make it work, you know, that’s going to help us rise up like phoenixes from the ashes.”

She also spoke about feeling free and finding her identity at a young age in New York. “My first dance teacher was I guess the first gay man I ever met,” she revealed. “And I didn’t understand what being gay meant. I was, I don’t know, 13 years old and he’s the one who introduced the idea of thinking outside the box.”

“I felt free. I felt alive, I felt like I wasn’t alone in the world anymore,” she said. “I didn’t feel like a freak.”
