One of the most famous scenes in iconic 1980 comedy “9 to 5” involves Dolly Parton’s character, secretary Doralee Rhodes, discovering her sleazy boss (Dabney Coleman) has been bragging to other men in the office that he’s been sleeping with her — a lie — and angrily confronting him.

“Look, I got a gun out there in my purse, and up til now I been forgivin’ and forgettin’ because of the way I was brought up,” says furious Doralee, “but I will tell you one thing: if you ever say another word about me or make another indecent proposal, I’m gonna get that gun of mine and I’m gonna change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot.”

It’s practically impossible to imagine any other actress delivering this classic speech — but that hasn’t stopped a few non-female thespians from giving it their best shots, with W Magazine honouring Parton’s birthday (she turned 71 on Thursday) by enlisting Matthew McConaughey, Michael Shannon and Chris Pine to put their own unique spin on the speech.

Some truly interesting line readings result — although it’s a given that the role will always belong to Dolly!
