The force is with “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, which has passed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office this weekend, just over a month since its release, raking in another $7 million this weekend domestically.

Meanwhile, the weekend box office was otherwise ruled by M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split”, which took in more than $40 million domestically in its opening weekend — a number that’s even more impressive when you consider the director self-financed the film, which only cost $10 million to make.

Landing in the #2 spot this weekend was the Vin Diesel action sequel “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage”, which took in $20 million at the domestic box office, reports The Hollywood Reporter, adding that the film did far better internationally, where it brought in more than $50 million, and stands to make far more when it opens in China next month.

Other films premiering this weekend did not do nearly as well, with Michael Keaton’s fast-food biopic “The Founder” earning just $3.8 million, while faith-based drama “The Resurrection of Gavin Stone” only earning $1.4 million.
