“Arrival” director Denis Villeneuve and “La La Land” star Ryan Gosling will both be repping Canada at the Oscars next month.
Villeneuve tells ET Canada he spoke to Gosling this morning after both men received news of their 2017 Oscar nominations.
“We didn’t discus yet about how we will represent Canada,” he laughs. “But we did exchange a few words this morning.”

Villeneuve, who directs Gosling in the upcoming sci-fi sequel “Blade Runner 2049”, reached out to the actor whom he calls a “comical genius.”
“We called each other. He’s in China right now doing press for ‘La La Land’ and we exchanged a few words because we are like, I mean we spent months together, months and months working together,” he says. “We became friends and we are both of us, I can say we are both proud of each other. It’s quite a nice ride for both of us and I’m very happy for what he did. He was absolutely fantastic in ‘La La Land’.”

Adding, “Ryan is the kind of comical genius. You know he has that sense. He’s a very strong actor and I’m very proud of what he did in ‘La La Land’.”
“But about how I will represent Canada, that I can’t say yet,” he laughs. “The fact that we represent… [this] strange entity that is Canada… You know, we did make a lot of jokes about that for sure.”
