Meghan Markle has just wrapped up a humanitarian mission to India on behalf of World Vision Canada, leading an initiative aimed at inspiring and empowering young women in impoverished parts of the nation.
The “Suits” star — known for her philanthropic efforts — flew to New Dehli in early-January after first getting to meet Kate Middleton and Prince Harry’s young niece Princess Charlotte in London.
World Vision Canada released a statement to ET Canada regarding Markle’s recent mission: “World Vision’s Global Ambassador Meghan Markle was in India on an experiential learning mission to highlight key issues facing girls living in poverty. As a strong advocate for gender equality, Markle has worked closely with World Vision to create a trip specifically focusing on and bringing awareness to girls’ lack of access to education. She engaged with local activists and educators to help ensure girls felt equipped and safe to attend school, and worked to improve access to girls’ latrines, the lack thereof being a significant problem for 63-million teenage girls in India. World Vision, a relief, development and advocacy organization, has been active in India since 1951.”
“She wanted to learn as much as possible from the women in these communities so she can see what is needed and how she might help them in the future,” another source confirms to People.
After being in India for almost a week, Markle was photographed by paparazzi in the Mumbai airport over the weekend before her departure, sporting a traditional henna inking on her arm.
After returning from India this week, Markle tweeted about the return of “Suits” on Thursday, Jan. 25. Below is a “Suits” teaser featuring the actress – spoiler alert – in a wedding gown. Close your eyes Harry, everyone else, watch below!
