With Katherine Heigl, 38, returning to TV in February with her new CBS show “Doubt”, the actress is on the cover of the latest issue of People and has introduced her first son to the world: Joshua Bishop!
Heigl is married to musician Josh Kelley, 37, and the pair welcomed Joshua on Dec. 20. For Heigl, she’d planned to expand their family but wasn’t sure where to start. “It was a surprise! I knew I wanted to expand our family, I knew I wanted to have more children. I just didn’t know how we were going to go about that,” she revealed to People.
The former “Grey’s Anatomy” star reveals she is very much an A-type person and has to schedule everything and plan things out. When she discovered she was pregnant just as filming began on her new TV series, she was shocked.
“I’ll be totally honest, my first reaction was ‘oh s**t.’ But now we have a new normal, and I have to give myself a break in order to get used to it.” For the actress, she says that she never really anticipated carrying her own child. “I got really invested in adoption. I didn’t look back or even think about it,” she said. “Only when I was about 35 did I start going, ‘Well, should we consider getting pregnant?’ You don’t want the choice to be taken away from you.”

Heigl’s older sister, Meg, was adopted from Korea and has shaped her vision of what family means. Joshua joins two older sisters: Naleigh, who is 8 and adopted from South Korea, and Adalaide, 4, adopted from Louisiana. “This little boy is going to have all these girls fawning over him,” Heigl says.
She admits that they’re at the point where they’re obsessed with their son. “With a newborn, you’re forced to be still … and you have this beautiful reason to do that,” she says. The actress also reveals she has plans to continue to grow their family again: “I’d get pregnant again, and I still am very inspired by adoption. I also have been thinking a lot about fostering. It’s all up in the air,” she says with a smile. “And I’m okay with that!” she revealed.
