TV viewers are used to seeing Melissa Benoist in a familiar red-and-blue costume keeping the world safe from harm on “Supergirl”, but the actress comes down to earth for her latest big-screen role in “Lowriders”.
“Lowriders” is set amidst the low-rider car culture of East Los Angeles, where generations of gearheads have lovingly outfitted vintage automobiles with custom hydraulics that jack the cars up high and way down low.
The film follows the journey of young street artist Danny (Gabriel Chavarria), who finds himself caught between the lowrider world of his old-school dad (Damien Bichir, “The Hateful Eight”) and ex-con brother (Theo Rossi, “Sons of Anarchy”), and his burgeoning talent as an artist on the streets of East L.A.
The film also stars Benoist, former “Desperate Housewives” star Eva Longoria, Tony Revolori (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”) and Yvette Monreal (“Matador”).
“Lowriders” hits theatres on May 12. In the meantime, you can catch Benoist’s high-flying adventures on “Supergirl”, airing Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Showcase, with full episodes also available to view online.
