David Beckham appeared on BBC Radio 4’s “Desert Island Discs”, and in addition to revealing the music he’d want to take with him if he were ever stranded on a desert island the soccer great also opened up about his marriage to Victoria Beckham.
“People have talked about ‘do we stay together because it’s a brand?’ Of course not,” said Beckham.
“We stay together because we love each other. We stay together because we have four amazing children,” he told host Kirsty Young.
“We’re a strong family unit. We’ve got strong parents, we were brought up with the right values,” he added. “Of course you make mistakes over the years. We all know marriage is difficult at times, and it’s about working through it.”
Beckham also reveals that “without a doubt” that it was love at first sight for him and his bride, but recalls that Spice Girls creator Simon Fuller was “very protective over the girls and at the time he kind of wanted to keep it quiet” when he and Victoria first started dating.
“We used to just sit in the carpark and talk,” Beckham said of their early dates. “We used to kiss, of course, and just spend time together.”
Beckham admits he has no regrets about his marriage — with the possible exception of what he wore to the couple’s 1999 wedding, when he and Victoria famously sported matching purple outfits.
“I even had a top hat in purple,” Beckham lamented. “What was I thinking? I looked like the guys out of ‘Dumb and Dumber’.”
In fact, Beckham also reveals that he and Victoria recently renewed their vows, admitting this ceremony was a lot less lavish than their wedding.
“We have renewed our vows since [our first wedding],” he said. “It was a lot more private, about six people there in our house.”
