Despite spending years in Hollywood, Denzel Washington took home his very first Screen Actors Guild Award on Sunday night.

Nominated four times for Best Actor at the SAG Awards over the years, Washington was surprised by his win for “Fences”.

“I was shocked,” he tells ET Canada’s Sangita Patel backstage at the SAG Awards, moments after winning the trophy.  “Halfway through the show I said, ‘You better start thinking about some things to say, just in case.'”

Not only does Washington star in “Fences”, he also takes a seat in the director’s chair.  The drama, based on the play by August Wilson, had a Broadway run with the same cast, including Viola Davis, before being adapted for the big screen.  Davis won the Best Actress In A Drama SAG Award and the entire cast was nominated for Best Ensemble In A Drama.

“I had things ready in case we won Ensemble,” Washington says.  “I was surprised.”

While Davis and the cast might have celebrated into the night, Washington had other plans.

“I’m gonna get out of this monkey suit, little ESPN, get my shorts on, scratch my behind, and go home,” he says, laughing.  “I don’t know where they’re going, I’m going home.”

Washington may be one of the most famous faces in Hollywood, but even he can’t resist the charm of Netflix’s “Stranger Things”.

“Stranger Things” stars Millie Bobby Brown and Noah Schnapp tell Sangita Patel how excited they were to have Washington crash their backstage interview.
