To celebrate the launch of the all-new BBC Music season, the veteran broadcaster has remade The Beach Boys’ classic God Only Knows. With a little A-list help, naturally.
Over two dozen artists, including Dave Grohl, Lorde, Pharrell Williams, Chris Martin, Florence Welch, Sir Elton John, One Direction, and Stevie Wonder teamed up to record the the track, which originally appeared on the 1966 album, Pet Sounds.
The revamped tune (video below) was simulcast on Tuesday evening, appearing on every BBC television, radio, and online network.
As for the end result? Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson seems more than impressed. “All of the artists did such a beautiful job — I can’t thank them enough. I’m just honoured that God Only Knows was chosen. [It’s] an extremely spiritual song and one of the best I’ve ever written.”;
The broadcaster describes BBC Music as, “An ambitious wave of new programmes, innovative partnerships and ground-breaking music initiatives that amount to the BBC’s strongest commitment to music in 30 years.”;
