‘Once Upon A Time’ Planning Special Musical Episode

By Brent Furdyk.

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” did it. “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” does it every week. Heck, even “The Flash” and “Supergirl” have announced plans to do it, together.

And now, “Once Upon a Time” will be the latest TV series to put its cast to work singing and dancing in a special musical episode, with Entertainment Weekly reporting that the news announced by exec producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis Thursday at the ATVFest television festival, currently underway in Atlanta.

Details about the upcoming episode aren’t yet known, nor is the episode’s air date, although the best guess at this point is that we’ll see it at some point this spring.

While “Once Upon a Time” has never attempted a musical episode before, EW points out that many of the cast have backgrounds in musical theatre, including Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas, and Ginnifer Goodwin.

Back in May 2016, EW asked the “OUAT” producers whether they’d ever consider doing a musical episode, and their answer at the time now seems a bit on the coy side. “That will be based on time and someone knowing how to do a musical,” said Kitsis, “and I can tell you the two of us do not.”
