Naomi Campbell refuses to let the fashion industry’s ongoing lack of diversity go unnoticed.

Sitting down for an interview with Town and Country editor-in-chief Stellene Volandes in New York City on Tuesday, the supermodel got candid about her thoughts on fashion’s failure, before admitting that it’s “getting better.”

The model, who broke down boundaries when she appeared on the cover of such magazines as French Vogue, expressed disappointment over the industry’s lack of progress: “I do feel that Iman and I will not shut up until it gets to the point where it’s equal, balanced,” she shared. “I mean, I just saw a little bit of couture. I did look online at the couture shows and it was a little bit disappointing. This week we’re starting off in New York. We do a count [of diverse models]. We really hope it’s not going to go backwards — I always try to be optimistic — but if it does, then they will hear us again.”

Given the array of beautiful and diverse models today, Gap’s newest campaign star went on to note that designers should naturally feel compelled to cast models of colour as opposed to feeling obligated to do so.

At 46 years of age, Campbell shows no signs of slowing down, having nabbed yet another appearance on newsstands with her cover of next month’s Town And Country issue. The ageless beauty strikes a confident pose for the issue that sees her flaunt some of the chicest black pieces of the season.
