A luggage-related mishap resulted in singer Jason Derulo exiting an airplane in Miami and being met with more than a dozen police officers, and Derulo is saying it’s because of racism.

According to TMZ, Derulo and eight friends were checking in for an American Airlines flight on Wednesday, but ran into some hassles when they attempted to check 19 bags.

In a video obtained by TMZ, the “Talk Dirty” singer says he’s a member of the airline’s Concierge Key ” program, which he says allows him to check an unlimited number of bags at no charge, but was perturbed when the staffer checking the in was allegedly “rude and said he couldn’t check his bags.”

TMZ did some digging and theorizes that Derulo and his crew may have arrived too late to check luggage, which led to one member of the group staying behind to check the bags on a later flight.

This, reports TMZ, is “when all hell broke loose.” Derulo and the others had made it on the plane, which had pulled out of the gate when his cellphone rang. “Our guy calls us and says it’s going to be [$6,000] to check all the bags,” Derulo said.

Derulo says he was outraged, and demanded the plane return to the gate so he could get off and deal with the situation.

“The pilot comes and makes a scene,” Derulo said. “He said ‘I want these guys off the plane right now.’ I said ‘Listen to me sir, you’re not going to talk to me like I’m your son.'”

When Derulo exited, there were 15 police officers waiting for him, but no arrests were made once the cops learned his identity.

“Soon as they find out who I am the whole gear changes,” said Derulo. “It’s all relaxed and it’s all cool. If I was not who I was, if I wasn’t Jason Derulo, I wouldn’t be here right now I’d be in f***ing cuffs. It’s 100 per cent racial because the initial thought in people’s minds is ‘these hoodlums are causing problems.'”

After additional investigating, TMZ found that because one friend attempted to check 19 bags after the others had already left to board their flight, “American would not credit 19 bags to one person.”

Following the incident, the “So You Think You Can Dance” judge took to Instagram to blast American Airlines for what he’s characterizing as “racial discrimination,” posting a photo of the not-so-helpful airline staffer.

“I spent millions on your airline throughout the past 10 years between myself and my entire staff but have still experienced racial discrimination today at Miami airport!!!” he writes. “Called 15 police officers on me as if I’m a criminal! It’s not OK that when you find out who I am the gears change! F*** that!! I want answers.”

American Airlines has issued a statement about the incident: “American Airlines flight 275 returned to the gate prior to departure. A passenger elected to deplane in order to travel with their checked bags,” the statement reads. “The passenger has been rebooked with his checked bags on a later flight this evening.”
