The 2017 Grammys had everyone chirping on social media, but these five moments left the biggest impression.
Facebook’s Biggest Moments (North America):
1. Adele Sets Fire To The Grammys
Adele was arguably the star of this year’s awards show. From casually suggesting she was married to winning countless awards to dropping an F-bomb and restarting her emotional tribute to George Michael, Adele stole the scene every time she was on camera. Her back-to-back awards for Record of the Year (“Hello”) and Album of the Year (“25”) were the most talked-about moments of the entire evening on Facebook. During her acceptance speech for Album of the Year, the English singer made it clear she believed the award should have gone to Beyonce for “Lemonade”.
2. Lady Gaga And Metallica Mashup
In what may have been the show’s most interesting mashup of artists, Lady Gaga and Metallica together performed the latter’s “Moth Into Flame”. What fans got was a high-energy set with flames spiralling in the background. Gaga never missed a beat; unfortunately, Metallica lead singer James Hetfield’s microphone wasn’t working, a technical glitch that sullied the first half of the performance.
3. Beyonce’s Big Performance
Only a short while after announcing she was pregnant with twins, Beyonce put on a heck of a show at the 2017 Grammys. Showing off her baby bump in all its glory, Queen Bey’s euphoric set was highlighted by songs “Love Drought” and “Sandcastles”.
4. Adele, Take Two
What is an awards show without a little drama? James Corden introduced Adele’s tribute set by delivering a sentimental speech about the late, great George Michael. Adele, performing a reworked version of Michael’s “Fastlove”, stopped mid-performance after dropping an F-Bomb. She apologized incessantly, asking for a redo. “I’m sorry for swearing and sorry for starting again. Can we please start it again?” the British songstress said. “I’m sorry, I can’t mess this up for him.” The “Hello” singer nailed the performance a second time, but she was visibly emotional afterward.
5. Bruno Mars Brings The Bars
Fan-favourite Bruno Mars launched into a performance of “That’s What I Like” from the singer’s third studio album “24K Magic”. Mars put his heart and soul into the number, bringing his trademark swagger to the 2017 Grammys ahead of his “24K Magic” World Tour.
Twitter’s Most Talked-About Stars (Canada)
1. Queen Bey Reigns Supreme
Everyone was eager to see how exactly Beyonce would steal the show at the 59th annual Grammy Awards. The tail end of her performance was the evening’s most talked-about moment on Twitter, plus, you can bet her nine Grammy nominations and adorable back-and-forth with Adele contributed to her ranking on this list.
2. The Adele Show
Between two live performances and five award wins — tying David Bowie for most awards won — Adele was undoubtedly going to crack the list of top five most talked-about stars on Twitter.
3. #RihannasFlask
Rihanna may not have won any awards at this year’s Grammys, but she may have left as the show’s biggest star. The “Work” singer set social media into a frenzy after photos and videos surfaced of the singer drinking from a bedazzled flask throughout the night.
4. Chance The Rapper’s Coming Out Party
Chance the Rapper has been a phenom outside the mainstream for years, releasing a slew of popular mixtapes free of charge to his devoted audience. All that hard work has come full circle, after the Kanye West protege snagged awards for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance (“No Problems”). His crowning achievement came when he beat out the likes of West and Drake for Rap Album of the Year for his work on “Coloring Book”.
5. Lady Gaga Into Flame
Lady Gaga’s stellar, high-adrenaline performance with Metallica kept the singer’s momentum rolling. After a breathtaking performance at the Super Bowl LI Halftime Show and the subsequent announcement of her “Joanne” World Tour, her Grammys rock-star set continued to prove why Gaga is one of the world’s most popular acts.
