First Transgender Model Takes Cover Of French Vogue

By Sylvia Ogweng.

In a first for the highly-influential fashion magazine, French Vogue has selected a transgender model to grace its latest cover.

Brazilian beauty Valentina Sampaio lands on the publication’s March issue, nabbing not only one but two versions of the fashion Bible. “Transgender beauty: How they’re turning the world upside down,” the cover line reads.

Sampaio sizzles on the cover with bold brows, plump red lips and a sultry smoky eye, while wearing a plunging lame gown — one of the standout trends of the season.

According to US Weekly, the model rose to stardom as a L’Oreal Paris ambassador alongside the likes of Eva Longoria, Blake Lively and Doutzen Kroes, and appeared on the cover of Elle Brazil last fall.

The stunning model celebrated the achievement on Tuesday by sharing her newest work with her 36,000 fans on Instagram. “Valentina’s day…Two covers are better than one,” she captioned one of the covers which coincidentally debuted on Valentine’s Day.

French Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Emmanuelle Alt, also shared her thoughts on the history-making move. “In a postgendered world, which more and more designers are highlighting on their runways, Trans people — the ultimate symbols of a rejection of conformity — are icons that Vogue supports and chooses to celebrate,” she said.
