Regis Philbin was a fixture on daytime television for decades, first as co-host of “Live! with Kathie Lee and Regis” (1988-2001) and then opposite co-host Kelly Ripa when the show was renamed “Live! with Regis and Kelly”, with the duo serving as co-hosts until Philbin left the show in 2001.
Philbin, 85, and Ripa, 46, may have been TV partners for a decade, but in a revealing interview with Larry King Philbin opens up about his shattered relationship with his former co-host.
Asked by King if he and Ripa have kept in touch, Philbin responds: “Not really, no.”
As co-host of the show for an impressive 28 years, Philbin admitted he finds it unsettling that he’s never been invited on “Live!” in the years since he left. “Never once did they ask me to go back,” he tells King.
“She got very offended when I left,” he says. “She thought I was leaving because of her. I was leaving because I was getting older and it wasn’t right for me anymore.”
“She took it personal?” asks King.
“Yeah, I think so. That was 11 years ago,” responds the former “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” host.
“Haven’t heard?” King asks, to which Philbin replies: “Never have.”
Despite Philbin’s assertions that he’s “never once” been asked back to the show, Dave Davis, President and General Manager of WABC (which produces “Live! With Kelly”) says that’s not actually the case, and has released the following statement: “It was wonderful to have Regis on the show for our 2015 Halloween special,” reads Davis’s statement. “He’s also been invited back several times as a guest, and in fact was confirmed for a date, but was not able to make it at the time.”
