Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender compete for the affections of Rooney Mara in the just-released first trailer for “Song to Song”, the latest drama from acclaimed filmmaker Terence Malick (“Badlands”, “Days of Heaven”), a tale of love, betrayal and obsession set within the Austin, Texas, music scene.
In the trailer, the strains of Del Shannon’s 1961 hit “Runaway” underscore the drama that takes place between two couples, with Gosling portraying a struggling songwriter named BV who falls in love with a singer (Mara), while Fassbender is a smooth-talking music mogul, Cook, and Natalie Portman plays a waitress, with everyone’s lives becoming complicated when love triangles begin to develop.
“We thought we could just roll and tumble,” says Mara’s character in a voiceover. “Live from song to song, kiss to kiss.”
According to Rolling Stone, the film was partially filmed during the 2012 Austin City Limits festival, and features cameos by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Iggy Pop, while other music acts rumoured to appear include Arcade Fire, Patti Smith, John Lydon, Florence & the Machine and Iron & Wine.
As RS reports, the film has undergone “extensive editing over the past four years,” with Christian Bale reportedly doubtful that the small role he filmed will make it into the final cut of “Song to Song,” while other actors who may or may not appear include Benicio Del Toro, Cate Blanchett, Val Kilmer and Haley Bennett.
“Song to Song” will make its official debut at SXSW on March 10 before opening in New York and L.A. on March 17.
