“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” continued its fourth season on Sunday by examining President Donald Trump’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Oliver was confused by Trump’s budding relationship with Putin and attempted to explain their friendship. While Trump continues to declare that his relationship with the controversial leader is amicable and nothing to worry over, Oliver suggested otherwise.

The political pundit took aim at Putin, his personality, and his problematic history as a leader. He also explained why, unlike what Trump keeps suggesting, it wouldn’t be nice if “we got along with Russia” and joked, “It’s a bit weird that you’ve been objectively nicer to Vladimir Putin than you have to Meryl Streep.”

Oliver continued his segment by reminding his audience and viewers that Putin is actually loved in Russia, regardless of his controversial history. “I know that over here, we think of Putin like a cartoon character that stages photo ops where he’s shirtless on a horse or swimming like a dolphin or emerging from the sea like a Bond villain. But in Russia, he’s not some comic book villain; to many, he’s a comic book hero. He’s genuinely popular there,” he revealed.

“Putin has carefully created an atmosphere in Russia that is extremely hostile to any opposition,” Oliver continued. He ended the segment suggesting that by befriending Putin, Trump could possibly get his own techno-inspired theme song, too.
