Tarek and Christina El Moussa rocketed to fame through their house-flipping HGTV series “Flip or Flop”, and in hindsight Tarek El Moussa thinks the couple’s sudden celebrity was one of the contributing factors to the deterioration of the marriage (in December, the couple revealed they were separating after seven years of marriage, and they subsequently filed for divorce).
In an interview with TV’s “The Doctors”, El Moussa blames fame, as well as his cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment, as being contributing factors to creating a lack of communication with his wife, which ultimately led to the unravelling of their marriage.
“I feel like if we had better communication, we would have had a better relationship,” El Moussa says in the episode, which is scheduled to air on Monday, Mar. 6. “I think as time went on, you get busier and busier — and, you know, it was overnight. Businesses, TV, all these things happened at once, and then the cancer, then the cancer, then the back surgery. It just kind of started pushing us apart from each other.”
In the interview, El Moussa also addressed the headline-making incident last year in which he fled the family home with a gun in his backpack, which he chalks up to a “misunderstanding,” and explains: “I have a CCW [carrying a concealed weapon] permit in California, I’ve gone through the training, the schooling and everything.”
Despite the couple’s divorce, Tarek and Christina will continue to work together on “Flip of Flop”. Less than two weeks ago, El Moussa appeared on “Today” and admitted that while it may be challenging, they’re able to set aside their personal issues while the cameras are rolling.
“We’ve been flipping houses, and not only flipping houses but doing it on TV, for a very long time,” he said. “So like anything, there’s going to be a challenge, right? Me and Christina are professional. We know we have a job to do. We love what we do and we want to deliver a good product to our fans.”
“Flip or Flop” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV Canada.
