Thanks to SHAPE magazine, we now know Eva Mendes’ go-to guilty ‘food’ pleasure – donuts.

Like many second-time moms, Mendes says she found losing the baby weight was much harder after the birth of her second child: “In some ways, it’s been more challenging to get back in shape after my second daughter. Yet it’s not as hard as I thought it would be, because I’m always running around with the kids.”

In addition to staying active during the day, Mendes says she has gotten rid of the junk food in the house to set a good example for the girls – but that is sometimes easier said than done. “So there are no more Krispy Kremes for me to grab. But there is this app called Postmates that delivers whatever you want in minutes. It’s almost as bad as having the food in your kitchen. Don’t laugh, but they’re on the way here right now!” the April 2017 SHAPE cover girl confesses.

All good weight-loss plans start with a healthy diet, so for Mendes, 43, nutrition is key: “I usually start my day with eggs. I think they’re like magic – you can do so much with them. I mostly keep it simple and have scrambled eggs and a piece of Ezekiel toast for breakfast… I grew up eating rice and beans, so I want some kind of grain in every meal.”

It’s hard to completely cut out sugar and sometimes you need a sweet treat. “Sweets are my thing. It’s ongoing, and I have to manage my sugar cravings constantly,” the “Stuck on You” star continues.

So what are her favourite treats? “The mini [Cadbury eggs] and the big ones with the filling … [And] my mom makes the best black beans in the world. I’ll never stop devouring them,” the mother of two added.

A clean diet is only half of the equation, but fortunately Mendes has the workout part down to a science. “Working out allows me to spend time on myself. Knowing that I have an hour to dedicate to my wellness is a priority for me now,” she reveals. “I love doing intervals, like running and sprinting, and I see great results with that versus the 30 or 45 minutes of steady cardio I used to do on the treadmill. Between intervals, I lift weights.”

Mendes has a lot on the go, being a busy mom, actress and now adding a new fashion line to her name. The star dishes on the Eva Mendes Collection at New York & Company. “There are diverse body types in my family. One of my sisters is very voluptuous; the other one is skinny,” she explains. “It was really important to me to create a clothing line that embraces all those differences.”

But clearly Mendes’ most rewarding job is being a mother to Esmeralda, 2, and Amada, 11 months, with partner Ryan Gosling.

“What people don’t know about me is that I love being home,” Mendes tells the magazine. “Instead of hitting the red carpet, I’d rather be with our girls.”

The April 2017 issue of SHAPE, featuring Mendes on the cover, hits newsstands March 14.
