We’re clearly living in a charmed age. How else do you explain a brand new Chantal Kreviazuk single popping up out of nowhere on a Saturday night? Y’know, after a surprise cameo appearance on Saturday Night Live, no less?
That’s right, Chantal was just on SNL. The Canadian singer-songwriter extraordinaire swooped in to provide an assist on Kendrick Lamar’s “Pay For It”;. (This is why you’ve got to keep your head on a swivel on Saturday nights.)
The Juno-winning music marvel has just (as in RIGHT NOW!) unveiled her latest track, the emotionally stirring “I Will Be”;, for everyone’s listening pleasure. Chantal tells ET Canada that she’s thrilled to bring this new track into the world.
“”I Will Be’ is my fave song I have ever written since “Surrounded’ some twenty years ago,”; shared the singer. “Not sure how to explain it, but it just wrote itself like “Surrounded”; did…. And every word just comes from a guttural place, every note is from my most true instinct as an artist. I believe my feelings in it 100% and want to sing it all the time. I felt healed when I wrote it, I forgave myself of something, and that is what the therapy of music should do.”;
The celebrated Winnipeg entertainment export also talked to us about what it was like working with rap phenom Kendrick Lamar.
“The collaborative process with Kendrick has been truly remarkable. He does pay attention to detail. But he knows what he wants and he is also very supportive,”; explained Chantal. “He is great at giving a push and letting you feel free to create. I think that this is the best environment for creativity. I wrote this hook at the piano and simply voice-texted it to the studio. He hit me back with a small directive to complete it.”;
Chantal’s innate talent for songwriting has led the musician to score gigs co-crafting tunes for/with recording giants such as Gwen Stefani, Josh Groban, Kelly Clarkson and Drake. It’s a line of work that demands versatility.
“Writing in this business is so different from one project to the next,”; offers Chantal. “Sometimes it’s so specifically for someone else, you just don’t have your mind in it for anything or anyone but the project…. You are in with their whole team, and you just focus. Writing alone is dangerous because it could always end up being for me! Oops!”;
Is there anyone that Chantal is dying to work with in the future?
“I would love to work with Adele,”; she tells ET Canada. “Great vocal instrument and one of the truest artists of our time… Kendrick-level even!”;
