“American Idol” season 15 runner-up La’Porsha Renae is under fire on social media for some controversial comments she made, revealing in a series of tweets that she used to be gay until she decided to be straight.
“I chose to be heterosexual after being homosexual for 2 years,” Renae declared on Twitter, adding: “I chose a belief system that felt TRUE to my spirit.”
Renae found herself in the centre of a Twitter maelstrom, with numerous users of social media chiming in to refute her statement and brand her as a homophobe. To which Renae responded that “the bigger picture of my statement was that homosexuals should be loved and respected, not dehumanized… not whether/not it was a choice.”
To those who insist that being gay is not a choice, she responded: “You’re wrong to think it’s not a choice for some… because it was for me.”
Those responses, however, did little to quiet her critics, who unleashed a torrent of tweets slamming her, with this one from Perez Hilton pretty much summing up the sentiment:
By the way, this isn’t the first time Renae has been taken to task for comments she made about homosexuality. Back in April 2016, she issued an apology after an interview in which she stated: “I am one of the people who don’t really agree with [the homosexual] lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way. It wasn’t how I was raised.”
