Fans in attendance at Friday night’s “Mindfreak Live!” show at the Luxor in Las Vegas watched in shocked horror as a trick performed by Criss Angel went horribly wrong, with the unconscious illusionist rushed to hospital.
As reported by TMZ, Angel was performing his opening stunt, in which he attempts to free himself from a straitjacket while hanging suspended upside down. After he struggled for several minutes, Angel reportedly went limp and was lowered to the stage as the curtain closed.
“We’re told he appeared unconscious as guests were ushered out,” reports TMZ, adding that he was rushed to a nearby emergency room and was reportedly released later that night, with a source telling TMZ he “walked out of here” sometime before 10 p.m. local time.
Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Angel’s reps for an update on his condition, but has yet to receive a response; however, THR notes that tickets for Saturday’s Luxur show are still on sale.
A number of attendees at the show took to social media to relate what they witnessed onstage at the Luxor, including this account on Facebook.
“What an awful experience!” Peter Sehl wrote on the Mindfreak Facebook page. “10 mins into the show, Criss Angel was doing his upside down straitjacket stunt and was almost out after spinning for 2 mins and then they let him down. He stopped moving, curtain down. Break for 15 mins. Now show cancelled. Hope he is ok!! Didn’t appreciated people’s comments as they were leaving.”
In addition, others shared what they witnessed on Twitter:
Jon Katsilometes, a columnist for the Las Vegas Review Journal, tweeted that he has been “confidently told” that Angel will be performing on Saturday night, although he points out that “we have yet to hear any official explanation of last night’s incident.”
On Saturday, a rep for Angel released a statement to People: “During Friday evening’s performance, while attempting his famed upside down straitjacket escape while suspended by his feet, he lost consciousness,” says the rep.
“He was lowered to the stage and rushed to the hospital where he was evaluated and released early this morning. He is undergoing additional testing today and while it is not yet certain, it is his hope to return to the stage in his hit show ‘Mindfreak Live!’ at Luxor Las Vegas tonight. He is grateful for the outpouring of love and concern from his fans around the world.”
