Behind that amazing red carpet dress is typically an equally amazing celebrity stylist.
The Hollywood Reporter has announced its seventh annual ranking of Hollywood’s 25 most powerful stylists, paving the way for continually fabulous awards season fashion and, as THR puts it, making “their star clients shine.”
At the top of this year’s list is Karla Welch, who styles a variety of powerful celebrity clientele, including Golden Globe winner Sarah Paulson, America Ferrera, Karlie Kloss, Busy Philipps, Lorde, Justin Bieber, Pink and recent Academy Award nominee and red carpet favourite, Ruth Negga.
While he may not be at number one, “America’s Next Top Model” judge Law Roach, who sits at number 21 on the list, takes one of the five cover shots alongside Zendaya and Canadian music icon, Celine Dion. “Celine hadn’t walked the carpet in almost 15 years,” says Roach, who styled the singer in an emerald Zuhair Murad Haute Couture gown for the 2017 Grammys. “The dress was very ‘Dynasty’.”
Speaking of Zendaya’s highly-applauded nude Calvin Klein ensemble at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, he adds, “Zendaya had never been that exposed on the carpet, and we weren’t sure how her younger fans and parents would respond.”
Also on the list is Elizabeth Stuart at number four, who has become a staple stylist for actresses Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain, Gal Gadot and Academy Award winner Viola Davis. “Our awards season M.O. was clean, strong and colourful,” says Stuart, who dressed Davis in designers, like Armani Prive, Michael Kors and Jenny Packham. “It’s her year!”
Not forgetting the men, the list also includes stylist Ilaria Urbinati at number six, who works with Hollywood A-listers, like Casey Affleck, Donald Glover, Bradley Cooper and Tom Hiddleston. Urbinati, who styled both Affleck and “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle for the 2017 Oscars, reveals, “I had 15 people Oscar night, including two winners.”
Other notable stylists on the list include, Petra Flannery at number two, who has styled Emma Stone and Amy Adams; Kate Adams at number three, who notably puts Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton and Natalie Portman in Dior; and styling duo Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn at number seven, who breathe life into the styles of young Hollywood risers, Hailee Steinfeld and Lily Collins.
