For A Good Time Call tells the tale of two women – based on a true story – who start off as enemies, become roommates and then unlikely coworkers as they both work as phone sex operators for a hotline based out of their apartment. The movie stars Lauren Miller, who also wrote the screenplay with friend Katie Ann Naylon. In real life, the women were roommates in college during which Katie earned money for school with her.
The ladies eventually decided their unconventional story would make a funny screenplay. “When we sat down to write the script, we did the whole write what you know thing,” Lauren explains. “So we started off with our friendship but we also drew on Katie’s experience as…” “A phone sex worker!” Katie pipes up.
Because of the subject matter of the movie, there’s definitely no shortage of raunchy humour in For A Good Time Call, but there’s also a lot of heart – which is exactly what the cast and filmmakers were going for. “We wanted to make a movie that we wanted to see, ” says Lauren. “And female friendship is something that has not been portrayed lots of times, especially in an R-rated comedy.”
It was that portrayal of female friendship that convinced actress Ari Graynor that she had to play the role of Katie. “That was a huge part of it,” explains Ari. “The unexpected, beautiful surprise of this sweetness and this really truthful, great female friendship relationship. “
“When my agent told me it was a phone sex comedy, I didn’t know what to expect,” says the movie’s Canadian-born director, Jamie Travis. “I certainly didn’t expect it to be as rich and as grounded as when I read it. I knew this would be the script that would be my first feature.”;
“It was so fun that it was wrapped in this sort of delicious hot pink box of phone sex,” adds Ari.
The movie includes some famous comedians in cameos as callers to the sex hotline, including Lauren Miller’s real life husband, Seth Rogen. “I slept with him,” she explains. “He felt obligated.”
