Lights’ Video Blog 31: Before we dig into Lights’ current reign of pop glory, let’s pull out an interesting slice of video from the archives. In 2009, the Juno-winning singer-songwriter showcased this clip for her punk-n-metal days. This throwback video features Lights rocking out to a cover of Goldfinger’s interpretation of Nena’s “99 Luftballons”;. Preceded by a self effacing “LOL”;, we get to see 15-year-old Lights bringing some guitar fury (“wanted to be Tom Morello so bad”; notes the on-screen commentary) and singing about nuclear war in front some pleased looking young’uns. We feel comfortable declaring the future star to be both a superhero and a Captain Kirk.
Drive My Soul: Lights’ debut single “Drive My Soul”; could enchant any galaxy so this tune’s sci-fi visual accompaniment seems like a sensible strategy. This promo, which went to #1 on the MuchMusic Countdown, boasts a whimsical adventure that features blockbuster whimsy on a shoestring budget. As far as synthpop pilots go, who would your rather get you to your outer space destination? (We might recommend Lights wear something warmer on her next intergalactic excursion. It looks cold out there.)
Timing Is Everything: Olivia Newton-John better watch her back, because Lights has no issue with getting “Physical”; in her promos. The fitness-themed clip for “Timing Is Everything”; looks a bit like something a gym rat would envision if their protein shake was spiked with hallucinogens pilfered from Burning Man. Lights embraces the workout warrior within and even shares a dance with a handsome doofus decked out in stereotypical nerd gear.
Peace Sign (For ET Canada’s Orange Lounge): We were thrilled to have Lights grace Toronto’s legendary Orange Lounge for a special session with ET Canada. Viewers were treated to Lights providing a number of intimate and stripped down renditions of her songs, including this soul-stirring performance of “Peace Sign”;. Remarkable stuff.
Up We Go: Taking the stairs is always a healthy choice, but occasionally you might miss out on pop mayhem by passing on taking the elevator. Lights’ eye-popping promo for “Up We Go”; brought viewers on a wild elevator ride that featured sex, wrestling and wanton disregard for floor climbing etiquette. Throw in the added bonus of this spot being shot in one take and the replay value for this video is through the roof.
