The family is looking for legal action that’ll change how diving businesses operate, but to also help keep a spotlight on Stewart’s ocean conservation efforts.

Add Helium, the company in charge of the dive expedition and who sold Stewart his equipment, was named in the suit. Owner Peter Sotis is a convicted felon and is currently under investigation for using unapproved Chinese air tanks.

“When you learn more about these defendants and the history of negligent behaviour by people like Mr. Sotis, you come to realize this was a preventable tragedy that was going to happen to someone,” Michael Haggard of The Haggard Law Firm who is representing the Stewarts said in a statement.

Stewart went missing in January while filming his “Sharkwater” series.
