The curse of 2017 awards shows continues in terrible fashion.
Twitter is in shock after Tragically Hip band members Rob Baker and Paul Langlois were played off while acknowledging the band’s frontman Gord Downie at this year’s Juno Awards after the band won the Group of the Year award.
As Langlois was thanking Downie, techno music began playing loudly as the show attempted to cut to a commercial break. Langlois, however, would have none of it, noting that the band played on the same Ottawa stage during their “Man Machine Poem” tour.
As Langlois just kept on talking, the music changed from the techno beat to The Tragically Hip’s “Ahead By a Century” but Langlois was not going to give up his moment to thank the band’s terminally ill front man or their devoted fans. “Hey, I love this,” he said jokingly but defiantly. “Go to commercial, go ahead. This is my arena, not yours,” he said, eliciting cheers from the crowd.
Both Downie and the group snagged awards at this year’s Junos, but the early curtain call put a damper on social media’s celebration.
