Martin Freeman’s most iconic roles are, arguably, Tim Canterbury on The Office (the UK version, natch) and Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit trilogy. Two worlds one would never expect to collide.
Ah, but collide they did on Saturday’s episode of SNL. Martin — who served as host — starred in a four-minute vignette about our favourite Hobbit characters working at a British paper supply company. There’s Gandalf as the bumbling David Brent-style boss, Legolas as a mid-level paper pusher, and Gollum (played eerily well by Taran Killam) as Bilbo’s gullible foil. And naturally, some orcs and dwarves are on hand to round things out.
The end result: something both Ricky Gervais and Peter Jackson would be proud of.
