Orlando Bloom is opening up about moving on after ending his relationship with Katy Perry, talking candidly about the fall-out from those naked paddle-boarding pictures.
“Yes it was extremely surprising, I wouldn’t have put myself in that position if I’d thought it would happen,” he says of the paparazzi pictures that made headlines in August 2016 as Bloom and Perry holidayed in Italy. Bloom reveals he stripped down to his birthday suit for the notorious ride, his guard down after enjoying nearly a week of privacy.
“I’ve been photographed a million times in a million different ways. I have a good radar. We’d been completely alone for five days. Nothing around us. There was no way anyone could get anything. So I had a moment of feeling free…What can I tell you? Note to self: you’re never free,” he laughs.
While he and Perry have now gone their separate ways, Bloom says the two remain friends.
“We’re friends, it’s good,” he says of their split in February. “We’re all grown-up. She happens to be someone who is very visible, but I don’t think anybody cares about what I’m up to. Nor should they. It’s between us.”
Bloom, who shares a 6-year-old son, Flynn, with ex-wife Miranda Kerr, says it is important to set an example that relationships can end amicably.
“It’s better to set an example for kids and show that [break-ups] don’t have to be about hate,” he says.
It’s an example he has been striving to set since his split from Kerr in 2013. Bloom shares custody of Flynn with Kerr, who in January, described their post-divorce relationship as “amazing” to People.
“With Miranda, there was a sense that I don’t want my son to go back through the internet where people made up lies. Miranda and I have a remarkable relationship,” Bloom tells Elle UK. “We co-parent really well.”
