Chris Pratt Talks Fatherhood On And Off The Screen: ‘I’m Gonna Try And Toughen My Kid Up’

“Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2” is going to put the focus on fatherhood as Chris Pratt’s character Star Lord comes face-to-face with his dad, played by Kurt Russell.

Pratt was excited to be back with his “Guardians” co-stars like Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista, but it was new castmember Russell with whom he left an impression on.

“Chris is a jerk!” Russell tells ET Canada’s Matte Babel. “I’d ask him to leave the set when I have to do my closeups and he would grudgingly accommodate and he just finally stopped showing up which I was [like], ‘Thank you very much!’ he jokes.

“We love each other, we’re a family,” Pratt says, not knowing Russell’s response before Matte breaks the news. “He just said he didn’t like me?!”

“He said he would ask you to leave set often and you would just leave,” Matte tells Pratt.

“Is that why he did that…I thought he just needed his space,” Pratt quips.

While the on-screen father-son dynamic might need a little work, Pratt says he learned a lot from his real-life dad when his son Jack was born four years ago.

“He was very much a presence in my life. He was always there,” he recalls.

Pratt’s father Dan passed away in 2014 after suffering from multiple sclerosis for many years.

The actor says he wants to “toughen” Jack up a bit, but it sounds like he’s the one who needs to toughen up.

“I’m gonna try and toughen my kid up, but I don’t know if I have the heart for it,” he explains. “Because the minute I say something tough and he cries, I’m like, ‘Nooooo’ and grab him and hold him and love him so much,” he laughs.

“Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2” hits theatres on May 5.
