Gillian Anderson, a fan-favourite actress and longtime PETA supporter, penned an open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asking for him to end Canada’s commercial seal slaughter.
Anderson – who spends a lot of time filming in Canada, including “X-Files”, “Hannibal” and the upcoming “American Gods” – adds that climate change is already impacting the lives of baby seals.
The actress cites a National Geographic report on how the seal slaughter is outdated and harmful due to climate change effects on the seal population: “[C]limate change is already decimating ice-dependent seals. It has resulted in less ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Without ice, baby seals drown. You’ve said, ‘Climate change will test our intelligence, our compassion and our will. But we are equal to that challenge.’ My friends at PETA and I ask that you consider the impact of climate change on both humans and marine life and call off the commercial seal slaughter for good.”
This year’s season of seal slaughtering began April 11 in Newfoundland. Read Anderson’s full letter to PM Trudeau here.
