UPDATE (Monday, Dec. 29, 12:05 p.m. ET): It looks like all the controversy surrounding The Interview was a plus; although the film earned a modest few million during its limited theatrical release (just 331 U.S. theatres), the online release of the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy was a massive success, with Sony reporting the movie has brought in a record $15 million since its online release on Dec. 25.

Although the total take (a combined $17.8 million from online streaming and theatrical release) is less than the $20 million The Interview had been estimated to earn when it was planned to be released on Christmas Day in more than 3,000 theatres, Sony president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer says the studio is thrilled with the numbers.

“While this is a completely unprecedented circumstance without proper comparisons, we are very pleased with how it is doing both theatrically where we are seeing numerous sell-outs across the country, and online where it remains at the top of many charts,” Bruer told The Wrap. “Most gratifying of all is hearing how people banded together to watch the film and have a good time.”;

Seth Rogen tweeted the news that controversial comedy The Interview is now available on iTunes — in both the U.S. and Canada.

In addition, Seth also revealed that he, James Franco and Interview co-director Evan Goldberg will be live-tweeting the movie today, Sunday, Dec. 28 starting at 2 p.m. PST (5 p.m. EST). Watching the flick while they live-tweet, says Seth, will “be like Pop-Up Video”;:

Canadians may have felt shut out when the controversial Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy The Interview became available for streaming yesterday in the U.S. only, but today we have a Christmas present, thanks to Seth’s announcement that the film is now available to stream in Canada. “Canada!!!”; wrote Seth on his Twitter account. “You can now watch The Interview. Please enjoy. It was made in your country.”;

Meanwhile, Seth and co-director Evan Goldberg made a surprise appearance at an L.A. theatre that was screening the shot-in-B.C. film. As TMZ reports, Seth hopped onstage to declare: “If it wasn’t for theatres like this and people like you, this wouldn’t be f***ing happening.”;

More than 300 U.S. theatres will be screening The Interview on Christmas Day, while the film is also available in a variety of video-on-demand formats. For more info on how you can watch, visit theinterview-movie.com.
